Understand what each component contributes, why plant groups need different root-zone conditions and how watering, pot choice and airflow change the result.

Air matters as much as drainage

A mix can drain quickly but remain poorly aerated if fine particles pack tightly around roots.

Retention must suit the plant

Fine roots and moisture-loving plants need more even hydration than succulents or epiphytic roots.

The pot and room change the mix

A self-watering pot, warm cabinet and cool open shelf dry at different rates. Recipes are starting points, not watering schedules.

Component library

What the main components do

Base mix

The organic moisture-retentive foundation. It usually contains nutrition, so use less where roots need an especially airy zone.

Coco coir

A peat-free fibre that retains water. Quality and salt content matter, especially for sensitive specialist plants.

Bark

Creates larger pores and durable structure. Fine bark suits small pots; coarser bark suits thicker or epiphytic roots.

Perlite

A lightweight expanded mineral that increases aeration and reduces bulk density while contributing little nutrition.

Pumice

A durable porous mineral adding weight, aeration and some water-holding capacity.

Lava rock

A durable porous aggregate that increases structure and air space in free-draining and semi-hydro mixes.

Zeolite

A mineral with cation-exchange capacity that can hold nutrient ions in ordinary houseplant mixes.

Vermiculite

Retains water more strongly than perlite. Use it where additional moisture retention is genuinely useful.

Grit and coarse sand

Add mineral structure and weight. Very fine material can reduce pore space instead of improving it.

Sphagnum moss

Holds substantial water while remaining airy when loosely packed. Compaction reduces oxygen around roots.

Tree fern fibre

A fibrous structural material retaining moisture while preserving air spaces for epiphytic and sensitive roots.

LECA, pon and mineral semi-hydro media

Success depends on reservoir height, oxygen, water quality and complete nutrient management. Inert does not mean maintenance-free.

Plant-group guidance

Match root structure to the medium

Alocasia and chunky-rooted aroids

Use an airy mix that stays evenly moist without becoming stagnant. Young fine roots need more moisture continuity than mature roots in larger pots.

Climbing aroids

Monstera, Philodendron, Epipremnum, Syngonium, Scindapsus and Rhaphidophora suit structured media with organic material, bark and mineral aerators.

Hoyas

Most prefer a well-aerated moisture-retentive medium that drains freely. Fine-rooted species and small pots need more even moisture.

Succulents and Euphorbia

Use a mineral-rich free-draining mix with strong light. Grit cannot prevent rot if watering is too frequent or conditions are cool and dim.

Fittonia, Maranta and moisture-sensitive foliage

Use a finer more moisture-retentive mix while preserving enough air to prevent stagnant roots. Avoid repeated complete drying.

Carnivorous plants

Use nutrient-poor species-appropriate media and low-mineral water. Enriched houseplant compost, worm castings and fertilised mixes are unsuitable for the Drosera, Pinguicula and Nepenthes grown here.

Repotting decisions

Change the pot because the roots need it

Good reasons to repot

The medium has broken down, roots fill the usable volume, water movement is poor, the plant is unstable, or the current system no longer suits it.

Poor reasons to repot

A fixed calendar date, a pot that merely looks small, or an assumption that every new plant needs immediate disturbance.
