Identify before treating
Inspect new growth, leaf undersides, petioles, stems, leaf joints and the potting medium with a bright light. Damage alone is not enough to identify a pest.
Use UK-authorised controls only
Where a pesticide is needed, use a product authorised for home-garden use in the UK and follow its label. Never increase the concentration or improvise pesticide mixtures.
Expect follow-up checks
Eggs, protected stages or insects hidden in crevices can survive an initial treatment. Keep the plant isolated and repeat inspections at the stated interval.

Indoor scope: Every pest below can affect houseplants or plants grown under cover. Thrips, spider mites, mealybugs, scale and fungus gnats are the most routine indoor checks. Aphids and whitefly are less frequent indoors, but can arrive on new plants, flowers or plants moved between indoor and outdoor spaces. Outdoor-only pests are not included.
Glasshouse thrips
Most relevant to: Alocasia, Monstera, Philodendron, Epipremnum, Syngonium, Scindapsus, Tradescantia and Ficus.
- Look for
- Silvery or bronze scarring, distorted new leaves, black faecal specks and narrow cream, yellow or dark insects.
- Check
- Unfurling leaves, petiole grooves, leaf undersides and growing points.
- Manage
- Isolate, remove only severely damaged material, wash sturdy foliage where practical and use an appropriate UK-authorised control or professional biological-control programme. Follow-up is essential because eggs and pupae may escape the first treatment.
Glasshouse red spider mite
Most relevant to: Alocasia, Ficus, Schefflera, Maranta, Fittonia and Tradescantia.
- Look for
- Fine pale stippling, dull or bronzed foliage, tiny moving mites and fine webbing when numbers are high.
- Check
- Leaf undersides and petiole junctions. Tap foliage over white paper to make mites easier to see.
- Manage
- Isolate, wash suitable foliage, clean the growing area and use a control specifically labelled for mites or a suitable biological control. Warm, dry conditions favour rapid increase.
Glasshouse mealybug
Most relevant to: Hoyas, succulents, Ficus, Schefflera and aroids with tight leaf joints.
- Look for
- White waxy insects or cottony deposits, sticky honeydew, yellowing and sooty mould.
- Check
- Nodes, petiole bases, leaf axils, pot rims and support ties. Inspect roots if decline has no obvious above-ground cause.
- Manage
- Isolate, remove visible insects where practical and use a labelled treatment or appropriate biological control. Repeat inspections because juveniles are easily missed.
Scale insects
Most relevant to: Ficus, Schefflera, Hoyas and thick-stemmed succulents.
- Look for
- Fixed brown, tan or pale shell-like bumps, honeydew, sooty mould and weak growth.
- Check
- Stems, leaf undersides, veins and sheltered joints.
- Manage
- Remove manageable colonies without damaging the plant and use a labelled control if needed. Newly hatched crawlers are less protected than adults.
Fungus gnats (sciarid flies)
Most relevant to: Moist propagation media, Fittonia, Maranta and young aroids.
- Look for
- Small dark flies around damp compost and translucent larvae with black heads in the root zone.
- Understand
- Adults are mainly a nuisance. Large larval populations can damage seedlings and very young roots.
- Manage
- Correct avoidably wet conditions where the plant allows, remove decaying debris, monitor adults with yellow traps and use a recognised larval biological control such as Steinernema feltiae.
Aphids
Most relevant to: Tender new growth, flower stems, Nepenthes, sundews and soft foliage plants.
- Look for
- Clusters of soft-bodied insects, shed white skins, sticky honeydew and curled young growth.
- Check
- Growing tips, buds, flower stems and the youngest leaves.
- Manage
- Isolate, wash colonies off where the plant tolerates it and use a labelled treatment or suitable biological control.
Glasshouse whitefly
Most relevant to: Soft-leaved foliage plants grown warm indoors or under cover.
- Look for
- Small white adults flying when foliage is disturbed, honeydew and flat immature stages beneath leaves.
- Check
- The underside of newer but fully expanded leaves.
- Manage
- Isolate, remove heavily infested leaves where sensible, monitor adults with yellow traps and use a labelled treatment or professional biological control.
Root mealybugs
Most relevant to: Succulents, Hoyas and container-grown foliage plants showing unexplained decline.
- Look for
- White waxy deposits around roots, pot edges or drainage holes and weak growth.
- Check
- The root ball and inside of the pot. Keep suspects away from shared watering trays.
- Manage
- Isolate immediately, discard contaminated medium safely, clean pots and tools and follow current professional guidance for treatment or disposal.
